What to Wear and Not to Wear to a Wedding

With people not always wanting a traditional wedding anymore, it can be extremely difficult when deciding what to wear.

From formal black tie weddings to more casual alternatives, such as being married on a beach, you have to take into careful consideration what is appropriate for the occasion. If you don’t pay attention to the dress code, you will look out of place and stand out like a sore thumb.

At 1st Choice Cufflinks we have put together a guide to help you avoid any clangers and to ensure you achieve an overall stylish look no matter what the theme of the wedding is.

If you are organising a wedding you should mention the dress code in your invitations, so that your guests can dress accordingly.

Participants

If you are a groom planning a traditional wedding you should wear a morning suit, along with your best man and ushers. Morning dress produces a very formal yet stylish look and consists of a tail coat, trousers, waistcoat, white French cuff shirt, cravat or necktie, top hat, gloves and black shoes.

When selecting the colour of your accessories, such as cravats and neckties, it is important that it matches the colour scheme of your wedding. For example, it should be the same colour as the bridesmaids’ dresses.

With wedding cost spiralling out of control, it is very common for male members of the wedding party to hire their outfits. No matter whether you decide to do this or buy your attire, it is important you take time to get measured properly.

Guests

When selecting what to wear to a wedding there are a number of things you have to think about. Firstly you have to take in consideration the dress code the bride and groom have requested you to follow. If the wedding invitation does not mention this, try and find out before the big day. If it is going to be a black tie wedding it is important you dress accordingly.

Once you have established the dress code, next you should take in to account the location and time of year the wedding is taking place. For example, if it is taking place in the summer try and wear lighter colours and fabrics if appropriate.

After you have selected your outfit, try to think about what accessories you are going to wear. Try to find a watch that complements the rest of your attire and select some nice cufflinks to wear if needed.

Finally bear in mind that while it is important to look your best, never try to out dress the wedding party.
