History of Neckties

The origins of the necktie date back to the 17th century thanks to the battlefields of Europe. During that time the Croats, who participated in the thirty year war (1618-1648), wore brightly coloured neckerchiefs to distinguish themselves from the enemy.

It was while serving in France that this article of clothing started to be admired and began to be used as a fashion accessory. In particular, French Monarch Louis XIV championed the accessory and later formed a special regiment called the Royal Cravattes. Hence the word ‘cravat’ is derived from the word ‘Croat’.

Soon the cravat spread across Europe and reached the British Isles. The fashion craze swept the country and quickly became a sign of a well dressed gentleman. A range of designs promptly followed, with the English leading the way by introducing an array of patterns, colours and different knots to use.

The modern day necktie first appeared as a result of the industrial revolution in the late 19th and early 20th century. During this time there was a demand for neckwear that was practical and comfortable for everyday working life. Not long after, millions of people were wearing neckties across the world for both work and social occasions.

An influx of designs soon followed along with a range of materials being used, from luxurious silk to more affordable alternatives such as polyester. Although the size of ties has often varied (the 1960s saw the introduction of neckties that were five inches wide) the standard width of a tie is thought to be just over three inches.

The 20th century also saw the introduction of the clip-on necktie, which has been utilised by people who work in occupations, such as the police and engineers, where a normal necktie may pose as a health hazard.

As well as being used as a fashion accessory, the necktie has become a sign of membership and authority. From schools and services, such as the armed forces, using them as part of a uniform to people wearing them to show they belong to a club, neckties continue to be used as a symbol of identity.

With millions of neckties now available to suit all tastes and budgets for both formal and informal events, there has never been a better time to buy one. Whether you are attending a wedding or trying to impress your work colleagues, you are sure to come across something that fulfils your requirements.
