History of Cufflinks

Since their introduction in the 17th century, cufflinks have become a popular fashion accessory among gentlemen attending a range of events from formal occasions to social gatherings.

Originally used as an alternative to using ribbons and string, the design and production of cufflinks have come a long way since its humble beginnings with an impressive range of styles now available.

Although there is not a specific date when people started wearing cufflinks, it is thought they first arrived on scene in the 17th century. Due to the fact they were handmade and seen as a luxury item, cufflinks were only worn by the wealthy classes during this period.

Cufflinks started to be made on a larger scale in the mid 18th century thanks to invention of a range of machinery that made it possible to mass produce enamel cufflinks. Combined with the Industrial Revolution in the early 19th century, this resulted in cufflinks being accessible to a much wider audience and inspired an influx of new designs.

Another important development was made in the 1880’s by an American called George Krementz who patented a piece of equipment based on Civil War cartridge making machine, which enabled companies to mass produce one-piece collar buttons and cufflinks.

The popularity of cufflinks was at an all time high during the 1960s, but a decline in sales soon followed due to the mass production of tuxedo and dress shirts with buttons on the cuffs. However, the past ten years has seen a steady increase in the number of purchases and has resulted in the re-emergent of cufflinks. This is largely thanks to a range of top designers producing new and innovative designs, along with more traditional alternatives, for people to choose from.

With thousands available, both for casual and formal wear, there has never been a better time to buy a pair of cufflinks. Whether you are attending a wedding or an important business meeting, there is something to suit all tastes and occasions.
